A company on the brink of coming apart found one purpose.
How Discovery Consulting helped a large construction company unite around four words that changed everything.
A large construction company needed to unite — or risk coming apart. The strengths were there, but a shared sense of purpose to rally around was not.
Through Discovery Consulting and small-group facilitation, we helped them surface the purpose hiding in plain sight: “Only that which makes U.S. stronger.” ‘U.S.’ was in their name, and their work was large infrastructure — the concrete and steel that literally makes the country stronger.
They communicated the purpose exceptionally well, and employees began using it as a decision-making tool — driving innovation and reducing costs. Each morning, every employee wrote down three things to make U.S. (the country), the U.S. (the company), or US (each other) stronger.
Astounding. Employees felt stronger, more empowered, and discovered even greater strengths. To show their purpose — not just say it — they ran a series of events building bicycles and giving them away, helping children be stronger too.
“Only that which makes U.S. stronger.”
