A summer bike tour that became a movement.
How a location-vs-location cycling competition grew into Tour DaVita — and a foundation built to put its own funder out of business.
One healthcare client created a summer bicycling tour, giving each location a small budget to build a community-engagement event and compete across several categories.
Cyclists rode from one location to the next all summer — helping each site execute its event, then judging it. Every result, photo and idea was published on an internal server, and the competition to outdo the last event was intense. The best part: in this kind of engagement, there are no losers.
It was a huge success — so much so that they kept the bicycle team. It lives on as Tour DaVita, now raising money for the company’s foundation: an organization created to end diabetes.
If the foundation succeeds, it puts the company — a kidney-care business — out of business. And the business keeps funding the foundation anyway. It seems crazy. It’s the epitome of Legendary Legacy.
“If the foundation succeeds, it puts the company out of business — and the business keeps funding it anyway. That is Legendary Legacy.”
