What it is

The purpose of this exercise is to bring group members closer together. This is true in the physical and metaphorical meaning.

Many groups need to unravel the difficulties before they can become a 'team'. Not all groups are teams. In fact, most of the 'teams' we facilitate for are simple groups that have been thrown together as a 'team'.

Physically they will be close together, and the reality of their interdependence is played out in this game.

Cohesiveness and teamwork creates a closeness in the group and begins breaking down the invisible walls we have around us.

The tools it will take to unravel the knot are the same tools needed to overcome challenges the organization or team will face.

What to watch for

  • Are participants having fun or are some people not engaged?.
  • If you have two teams, are they helping each other or trying to sabotage the other team?
  • What were some of the factors limiting your ability to help?
  • Do you notice them in other areas of your life (or work)?

Variations

  • Place a time restriction on the group.
  • The shorter the amount of time, the more stressful it will become.
  • However, 10 minutes is a good timeframe.
  • Frustration levels and the cause.
  • Who emerges as the leader(s) and does the role change as the problem develops and changes.
