Who it’s for

Anyone who has to get a group to think.

Great activities and great meetings live or die on facilitation. This workshop builds that skill in the people who lead your groups — and no prior training is required. The hardest part is often unlearning the teacher’s instinct to give the answer.

Managers & team leads

Run meetings, retros and offsites that actually produce decisions and change.

Trainers & L&D

Move from presenting content to facilitating real, sticky learning.

HR & OD professionals

Lead group sessions and team interventions with confidence and neutrality.

Internal facilitators

Anyone expected to guide a group through a process and a debrief.

What’s covered

The facilitation skills, learned by doing.

1

The facilitator’s role

What a facilitator is (and isn’t), the qualities that matter, and the responsibilities, challenges and common abuses of the role.

2

The experiential learning cycle

Why people learn by doing — and how to run the full loop: experience, describe, interpret, generalize, apply.

3

Running a great debrief

Open vs. closed questions, paraphrasing, probing and Plus/Delta — the questioning skills that turn an activity into insight.

4

The facilitator’s toolkit

Front-loading, the Full Value Contract, the Ladder of Inference and more — concrete tools you’ll practice and take home.

5

When it goes wrong

How to handle a dominator, a group that won’t engage, over-competitiveness, and a debrief that gets out of hand.

6

Making it stick

Follow-up that raises the collective bar — so the learning shows up back at work, not just in the room.

How it runs

You learn to facilitate by facilitating.

There’s very little classroom time. This is experiential learning about experiential learning — so you’ll run and debrief a real activity from start to finish, using the actual tools and activities from our own programs, and get honest, coached feedback from professional facilitators and your peers.

Run a real activity

You’ll select, set up, execute and process an activity yourself — not just watch one.

Coached feedback

Facilitate in front of the group and get specific feedback from pros and peers.

The real toolkit

Learn with the same activities and tools we use in our own workshops and events.

A handbook to keep

Everyone leaves with a bound Effective Facilitator’s Handbook to run sessions long after.

By the end, your facilitators can:

  • Select, set up, run and debrief an activity so it produces real insight.
  • Use the facilitative behaviors of a pro — open questions, paraphrasing, probing, neutrality.
  • Overcome resistance, seek clarity and intervene at the right moment.
  • Diffuse negativity and manage group dynamics in small groups.
  • Facilitate or lead even when they’re the boss — and know when not to facilitate.
Why learn it from us

We wrote the guide — and we’ve run it for two decades.

Everything in this workshop comes from producing experiential events for more than 500,000 participants since 2003. It’s not theory pulled from a textbook; it’s the exact playbook our own facilitators use in the field, taught the way it should be — experientially. It’s built on the work of our founder, James Carter — a facilitator of 25+ years and co-author, alongside Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard and Brian Tracy, of a book on personal strength. Participants learn by facilitating real activities and getting coached, not by watching slides.

Effective Facilitation workshop FAQs

Who is the workshop for? +

Anyone who leads groups: managers and team leads, internal trainers and L&D teams, HR and OD professionals, and consultants. No prior facilitation training is required — in fact, we help people unlearn the teacher/trainer instinct to supply answers and replace it with the facilitator’s skill of drawing them out.

How long is it? +

It’s a multi-day workshop, typically two to three days, so participants can practice facilitating real activities and get coached feedback. We tailor the length and depth to your group and goals.

Is it delivered in-house? +

Yes. We deliver it privately for your organization — at your site or virtually — using your context and challenges so the skills transfer directly to your work. We don’t run it as a public open-enrollment course.

Is the workshop hands-on? +

Entirely. It’s experiential by design — participants learn to facilitate by facilitating, running activities and debriefs and receiving coaching, rather than sitting through lectures.

What will participants be able to do afterward? +

Run an activity and lead a debrief that produces real insight, ask open-ended questions and use paraphrasing and probing, set ground rules and keep a group safe, handle dominators and non-participation, and connect what happens in the room to how the team works — then follow up so the learning sticks.
